Qatar was colonialized by Britain until the Muslim Ottomans regained
power from 1872 to 1915. In 1916, Qatar gave Britain
responsibility for its defense and foreign relations. When
Britain announced plans in 1971 to remove all British forces from
the Persian Gulf, Qatar sought protection from other Persian Gulf
States. It could not find a compatible protector and on
September 1, 1971, declared itself independent. Oil revenue give
the country one of the highest per capita incomes but a lack of
skilled labor has hampered development and expansion.
